UDL Principles: Big IQ Kids (Providing options for language, expressions and symbols)

  1. This is an excellent tool for any student, any age and works well with UDL methods. Interestingly, high level students reading content made for older ages sometimes need to hear the word also otherwise they may sound it out with emphasis incorrectly applied and get into the habit of mispronouncing it if they have not heard it in spoken language before. Good vlog!

  2. Vocabulary is huge in any content. If students do not understand what they are reading, they are not going to master the content. This is a great way for students to quickly check their own understanding as well as try to figure something out on their own before asking for help. Students often are quick to call the teacher over when they are stuck on a word, and this tool can be used in place of that, and then the teacher can help with even further understanding as needed.

  3. Good thoughts Emily. I've realized students are not ones to struggle with a challenging concept or word very long. Maybe if we build up this tool box of skills and resources, such as using BigIQKids, students will be able to do more on their own like you said. I actually implemented this website into my final TILP.
